Some Inspiration

Hey guys!

It has been way way way too long!  I have failed miserably this month in not only posting but actually doing projects to post at all.  Our house has been filled with sickness and injuries for literally a month. It started with my mom and I being bowled over with reoccuring illnesses and inflictions for weeks AND THEN my dad, as a lot of you know, had a bad bicycle crash and shattered his clavical and broke 3 ribs. Just when Mom and I were starting to be able to function again, Dad had his traumatic few weeks with the accident, Dr's visits, a surgery, more Dr visits, and pretty much round the clock care to stay on top of the wounds and pain. It's been a really hard beginning of the year for the Hobbses. But now, we're all on the mend and it can only get better from here, right?  ....crossing my fingers...

Ok, because I don't have anything to show you, I thought I'd share with you a few of the things that have inspired me.

1. I love when illustrators are able to evoke emotion and story telling into the simplest of characters. I adore Mo Willems and his Pigeon books! Here's a link to his blog page: Pigeon page  Mo creates the simplest form characters and shows an incredible amount of expression and body language throughout each of his books. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting a good young childrens series. They are so fun to read!

2. The art and humor of Marc Davis.  Ok, ok, I know its super cliche' to say I love Disney animators and add them to "favorites lists" but this particular artist had a knack for adding in his personal touch of humor and wit. In each of his projects, be it imagineering a park attraction or sketching out a character for an animation sequence, he was able to put his own little marc (ha ha PUN!) on each. If you look into a lot of the classic Disneyland attractions many of them have jokes and puns hidden within.
Some examples are:
A: The Hatbox Ghost in the Haunted Mansion, where the ghost carries around his own head in the hatbox
B: Some recent, but original ideas from Marc Davis, that were added during the Rivers of America refurb. Poor raccoons... its either the skunk or the water!!

C: Last, look at this characterization! So sophisticated and yet it's a pig...and an eagle... and an owl. And its hilarious. This is some concept work for the now extinct attraction "America Sings" (Fun Fact: a lot of these animatronics were/ and currently are being reused in Splash Mountain!)

3.Ok, the last little thing I want to show is a new (to me) blog one of my friends posted on facebook this week. I've sent it around to my friends already, but it's so stinking cute that I can't not show it on here for you all to see! It's called My Milk Toof  and it's the most teeth rotting sweetest thing you'll ever see.  Its a blog about 2 "Milk Teeth" and their adventures. The artist took some sculpy and made about 5 of each character with different expressions. Each frame is a picture illustration, so the story goes sort of like a stop motion comic. Please go check this out!! you will NOT regret it!

Hope you guys enjoy those little tidbits :) Im hoping to get back into the swing of things this weekend. It's been so tough, I'm more than ready for the weeks to get back to normal!

Have a Great Weekend!

Little Donkeys

So this week has been kinda crappy for me.

On Saturday after a wonderful lunch and afternoon with my cousins, I started to feel a lot of pressure in my head and sinuses. Apparently I got a bad sinus infection that then traveled to my ears. I don't know how many of you have had ear infections recently, but it's literally like torture! I can't hear anything out of my left ear but muffled sounds and once the antibiotics kicked in (on tuesday, because of course I got it over the weekend) it's like a clicking, popping, gurgling symphony happening in there. Oh, it also feels like someone is pouring water down my ear canal every second of every day.  I think I might be going insane.  I'm praying this things clears up quick because it is the most uncomfortable ailment I've had in a long time.

Needless to say, I haven't been as productive as I wanted to because it's extremely difficult to sketch while laying flat on the bed. hahaha I think all my drawings would come out leaning like the Tower of Pisa.

However, I did manage to get some gestures and studies of donkeys so that I could put together a character for one of my projects.  Here is one page I fleshed out and cleaned up a bit.

New projects!

Not much to show in this blog update but some new projects to share about that came up this week.

First off, I'm helping a friend out with some character sketches for a Children's Musical he's written. It's a Christmas story about a special little donkey. :) There are quite a few characters within it so I'll get to draw a lot of barnyard animals, Whoohoo! It'll help with promotion for the musical and he might try to self publish a book later on. Can I just say, baby donkeys might just be the cutest thing you've ever seen... ok hold on I have to show you...

Oh my heart strings!! you just want to squeeze him :)

Alright, I've recovered. The 2nd project(s) I've taken on are gifts to my cousins for their new babies/nurseries. Crazily, three of them are having kids this year within like a 6 month period, I'm way behind! haha! My first cousin, Jessica, has a whole farm theme going on in her kiddy's room, so ... you guessed it! More barnyard animals! This ones a little different tho because I can make it a full illustration of barn shenanigans. They're going to turn out really cute.
My 2nd cousin, Michaela, has been working with a color scheme for the baby's room and I think she might go more "zoo-ish" which will be pretty fun too. We're still working out the details.
And last but not least, Sarah, is expecting in June sometime and she doesn't know about the offer yet ;) Hopefully, she won't read this till after saturday when I tell her. haha  We'll see what she decides.

That's it for now. I want to start on a million other things but it all takes time and these projects get first dibs. I can't wait to share them all with you :)

First post of the New Year: Vinylmation!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a safe and happy time celebrating :)

To kick off the new year with posts, I felt it appropriate to show you one of the Christmas presents I received that will be one of my new projects.  To start, my sister and I LOVE going to Disneyland (well, really who doesn't??) and as fun as the princesses and characters are, my favorite thing about the park is the theming and Imagineering that goes on within it. I could pour over those "Art of..." books the park publishes about attractions and lands for hours on end. That being said, anything "art" related to the parks I sorta go gaga over :)
Well my sister surprised me this year with one of these babies:

Its a blank DIY Mickey Vinylmation!

Now I'm not really a Mickey person, I have to say.  The guy's cool and there's always something to be said about what he represents to the Walt Disney Company, but I'm not going to have my entire kitchen branding red pants with yellow buttons. Do you really want to pour your tea out of a spout stemming from a pair of pants? ermmm....No Thanks.

ANYWAY! The thing about these Mickeys is that you can do whatever you want to them! The shape doesn't really matter, it's all about the design element(s) you chose to put on them. For this guy, I'm brainstorming about Disney Memories in the parks. So original right? Considering the entire marketing campaign this year is "Let The Memories Begin". But my memories will never be the same as anyone else's and unlike the campaign, this one will last for a very long time.

I'm going to be using acrylic paint and some sculpted elements added to it. Not sure when this will actually be taking place because I really want to flesh out these concepts before I start painting. I want this to be a really cool show piece and not just an experiment that goes to crap.  So wish me luck!

Last post of 2010!

Seems like I started this blog a month ago, but when I look back in my post history.... Nope!!

Last year's Resolution for this artist diary was to post more on my blog... Did I make it?  *checks back to look at post count....* YES! With 2009 not even making the count to 10, 2010 kicked it's butt with 26 posts (and now with this one 27!).  While in Blog standards that's not really a trophy winning stat, I think I did myself proud with at least tripling the number.

So for this year, my goal is to do a post at least once a week. Whether it be doodles, character sketches, or the real deal illos for my portfolio, by the end of 2011 I should have my personal goal at least 52.  Im super excited for what this year holds for me in this stage. I've got a real direction on where to go and 2010 has been an incredible year of knowledge regarding freelancing Illustration. In school you're taught design, concept, and story, but no one can really delve into what happens after graduation and it's different for everyone.  There's no true road map,you have to figure it out for yourself.

2011, I'm coming after you!

To all of you, I wish you a Happy and Blessed New Year!

2010 Christmas Card "Happy Owlidays"

Wow! Its been a really long time since I last blogged. Work has been INSANE and I indulged in one of my other hobbies (theater) and performed during the Christmas season in "The Sound of Music".  So much fun but mixed with other holiday responsibilities/duties it left me with little time for much else... like blogging... and cleaning....  :/  eww.

However! Before the season started to get out of hand in regards to the many places I had to be at the same time, I sketched out and finished this illustration in the hopes of it being a Christmas card for my family.  He'll definitely be in my stack of cards for next year as well :)

Hope he brings a smile to your face...

I hope everyone had a Fantastic Holiday! and wish you all a Blessed New Year :)
